Writer's Journey - Cover Reveal & News of Loss of a Great SFF Author

I’ve met and learned from some wonderful authors. One of whom recently passed…

As you may have heard, best-selling author Eric Flint passed away a couple of weeks ago. I first met Eric at my first Superstars Writing Seminar back in 2011. He was one of the founders of the seminar on the business of being a Science Fiction and Fantasy writers. I attended his session on how to read and understand a book contract, I attended his session again a few years later the second time I went to the seminar. That was one of the most important sessions I attended that first time—I had my first book contract a bit more than a year later. His shared insights helped me not only understand the language of the contract but what rights I was selling.

There are times writers are asked to give up rights that just are not appropriate. In a short story contract I turned down, I was asked to give up the rights to my characters. Turns out enough of us turned down that contract that the publisher apologized and struck that clause from all our contracts, including those who hadn’t bothered to read the contract. If that hadn’t happened, they were going to be in for a rude surprise is they wanted to write more stories with those characters.

At my first Worldcon after my first book came out, I spoke with Eric in the Green Room, where he was hanging out between sessions. Eric co-wrote a number of books with David Weber, whose Honor Harrington Series is one of my favorites. David mentored Eric, co-writing their tie-in books. I commented to Eric that David Weber seemed very prolific. He told me that David is very prolific and taught him a lot as he wrote his parts of those novels and David helped, I guess, advised him on tightening his chapters up. That wasn’t the way Eric put it, but it was clear David Weber was a big influence on his professional writing career.

Eric’s the author of 1632 and co-author of many of sequels, and has served in the same role as David Weber did to him. The many authors he’s mentored have quickly risen in popularity in the genre—and are wonderful writers. Eric will truly be missed.
