Thoughts on Wheel of Time Season 1
The new year is here and I know I should have been spending more time writing… But, I’ve been watching Wheel of Time (WOT) — and Witchers, and… and Matrix Resurrections (or am I actually in the Matrix, hmm). Well, you get the idea. I love fantasy and mind bending sci-fi. And, I’ve been reading way too many comparisons of Wheel of Time to Game of Thrones.
As a fan of both, that’s gotten me thinking. I’m a long time fan of Wheel of Time. I’ve read all the books and, well, I've even met Brandon Sanderson — which made me even more of a fan, if that’s even possible. The production values alone of Game of Thrones (GOT) on HBO had me binging seasons over and over.
Wheel of Time is not making me binge what I’ve been watching weekly yet. I like the production of the show, but it wasn’t the first book in the series that grabbed me, it was the second book of the series and Robert Jordan’s world-building and story. I know Wheel of Time better than Game of Thrones, particularly considering that George R.R. Martin hasn’t finished writing the series of books yet… Knowing the complete Wheel of Time’s arc makes watching the series in some ways more enjoyable and in some ways… less. I see the changes and applaud the expanded focus on the ensemble cast over the focus of Rand being the main character in the first book. It's good television or, I suppose, streaming.
I love all those characters and the acting is pretty good in WOT. I love seeing the story come to life. What I’ve concluded is, yes, I’m going to binge WOT a few more times at least, and it’s the seasons to come that are going to make the fan in me go crazy. And, I really can’t compare GOT with WOT, at least not yet.
Both are epic fantasies at their best and the worlds are wildly different. The War of the Roses background theme of GOT is wonderful… but Robert Jordan’s WOT story roots have a different resonance for me, making the world strike really great notes in me. Seeing them on television, those notes continue to strike the right notes with me.
So, if you haven’t read Wheel of Time, consider it — or watch the series. This is what epic fantasy is all about.
