Nowhere to Go But Mars - ebook release in multiple formats March 1st
Nowhere to Go But Mars, my satiric take on immigrating in steerage class to the New World, has just been released today on Kindle and will be available in a wide range of formats tomorrow, including Nook, Kobo, and in the iStore.
Now as to why I wrote this story… I remember asking my Dad about our family history. Dad knew his parents immigrated from Eastern Europe, thought they both must have come through Ellis Island, but, well, his parents, aunts and uncles, never really talked about it. Years later, I lived in New York City and got the genealogy bug—and there Ellis Island was and the regional National Archives, where—before Internet research was available—I could research the family’s immigrant experience now 100 year and more past.
I found my ancestors’ passenger manifests on microfilm and learned what the listed responses told about their journey, including that one of my great-grandfather’s came over with just about $3.00. I learned about their experiences at Ellis Island thanks to those documents, learning about and visited Ellis Island, and what their passage in steerage class were like by talking to others who came over in similar ships just before and after World War II.
Nowhere to Go But Mars takes that experience, reverses it, while taking the dangers they faced in making that all or nothing choice in looking for opportunity in a new land and… well, you’ll see my take on the future of steerage class passage and the colonization of Mars.
I think this story is what science fiction is supposed to be all about.
Lastly, the paperback is available through Amazon.
