Writer's Journey - Inspiration
Ever been inspired by a book or series? I have. Knights Tower is inspired by an aspect of the Anne McCaffrey’s Dragon Riders of Pern. Pern with its dragons seems to be fantasy, but the clues are there that the series is really sci fi.
I love blending genres so when I first wrote Knight of the Broken Table, the first book of Knights Tower, which started as a short story, which I sold to an anthology what must be five years ago now, I knew I had a lot more to say about the last knight of Lasdrah and the steam powered dragon.
I’m what among writers is called a “pantser.” That means I discover a story in the writing of it — and that I end up doing a lot of rewriting as a result. That’s something I’m doing more and more, while write, which also seems to be improving my writing in the process.
I feel being a “pantser” often keeps my plots from feeling the same. I’ve come to personally detest books that feel formulaic, which can happen with books in series. I also feel that my characters have minds of their own and I like seeing where that takes the stories.
I hope you do too—and I’m continuing to make progress on book two of the series, Changeling Knight, which I’m hoping to publish later this year.
